The Armenian International Women's Association (AIWA) annually awards the Agnes K. Missirian and Zarouhi Y. Getsoyan Scholarships.
The scholarships are awarded to full-time female students of Armenian descent attending accredited colleges or universities. Students entering their junior or senior year in college, as well as graduate students, are eligible to apply for the awards, which are based on financial need and merit.
The deadline for submitting applications was April 8, 2008. Recipients will be announced and informed by mail in May, 2008.
The Agnes K. Missirian Scholarship, in the amount of $2,000, was established in memory of Bentley College (Waltham, Massachusetts) Professor of Management Agnes Missirian, a strong advocate for women's rights. An early and enthusiastic supporter of AIWA and its programs to advance the status of Armenian women, Dr. Missirian was a member of the AIWA Board of Directors and chaired the organization's first international conference, in London in 1994.
The Zarouhi Y. Getsoyan Scholarship of $500 was established by Naomi Topalian in memory of her mother, a native of Marash who was orphaned by the 1895 massacres, and went on to become a teacher as well as a strong supporter of education for women.
Two scholarships newly available for 2008-9 academic year, in amounts ranging from $2,000-$10,000, are earmarked for students in the fields of science, mathematics, engineering, technology, computer science, and architecture. They are named for Lucy Kasparian Aharonian and are awarded in conjunction with the Society for Women Engineers--Boston Chapter.
Due to the large number of applications, the scholarships have sometimes been divided among multiple recipients.
